James Campbell, QUB I have had minimal acquaintance with multimedia software. Nonetheless my personal experience of volunteering at the Belfast Computer Clubhouse has been a successful and engaging process. Volunteering my time to help the clubhouse members has given me a unique and rewarding experience. Watching while members develop sophistication in the use of some of the world's most cutting edge software has developed new skills for me personally with design programs and creative processes I'd previously never known. I believe the Clubhouse is one of the most exciting places you could volunteer in if you are seeking a worthwhile experience for a future career in IT or teaching. Working with younger members to create music, art, animation, and film, you'll find yourself surrounded by curious, engaging minds in a relaxed atmosphere which encourages the personal development of everyone involved. I would definitely recommend it to anyone considering volunteer work. |

Roisin Doyle, UUJ Hi, My name is Roisin Doyle and I am 20 years old. I'm currently attending Jordanstown University and I'm just starting third year which is a placement year. During this year I will be working in IBM in Dublin hopefully gaining the necessary experience to allow me to complete 4th year. I've been mentoring at the clubhouse since the start of 2008 and I absolutely loved my time there especially working with the kids and teaching them new skills on the various software. I even enjoyed the young people showing me one or two little tricks. I will definitely keep in contact with the clubhouse while I'm away on placement. |

Sarah Haughey I am a student at University of Ulster, currently in my third year of Interactive Multimedia Design. I began mentoring at the clubhouse last year as part of the Science Shop Project. At the clubhouse, I met a lot of new people and spent time helping others. I loved being able to pass on the skills that I learnt in University to the kids. It was great seeing them develop their own creative and technical skills over the year. It was sometimes difficult to find the time to fit the clubhouse around my university timetable but it has been one of my most rewarding and enjoyable experiences to date. I'm so glad that I had the chance to volunteer at the clubhouse. I loved working with young people and the other volunteers. I hope to be able to return as a volunteer to the clubhouse after my placement year at University. |
